Why backpackers come to Everest region
The Everest region is the Khumbu, not a city. You fly to Lukla and walk. Namche Bazaar is the first real stop, and from there the trails split toward Everest Base Camp, Gokyo and the high passes. Beds are in teahouse lodges, not city hostels.
Flights to Lukla are weather-dependent, so keep a spare day in Kathmandu on the way in and the way out. Carry cash. Costs and the cold both climb with the altitude.
