Nepal Trekking Permits Explained
Which permits you need for Everest, Annapurna and Langtang, and how the guide rule works.
The guide rule
Since 1 April 2023 Nepal requires foreign trekkers in most national parks and conservation areas to trek with a licensed guide. The Khumbu region uses its own local permit, so rules there can differ. Always check the latest before you travel.
Annapurna region
You need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and usually a TIMS card. Both can be arranged in Kathmandu or Pokhara, typically through your guide or agency.
Everest (Khumbu) region
You need the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. The local permit is issued in Lukla or Monjo.
Langtang region
You need the Langtang National Park entry permit and usually a TIMS card.
Restricted areas
Regions such as Upper Mustang, Manaslu and Upper Dolpo need special restricted-area permits that only a registered agency can issue, with a minimum group size.
