Best Hostels in Thamel, Kathmandu (2026 Guide)
Honest Thamel hostel picks by vibe, from social and party hostels to quiet sleeps, coworking corners and the cheapest dorms, with approx 2026 NPR prices.
Thamel has more hostels per street than anywhere else in Nepal. That's the good news and the problem. Walk from the Garden of Dreams up to Paknajol and you'll pass dozens of signs saying "backpackers", "dorm" or "hostel", and from the outside most of them look the same: a narrow concrete building, a rooftop, a sign promising hot showers.
What actually separates them is the stuff you only learn after a night: whether the bar stays loud until 1 AM, whether the female dorm is a real room or a curtain, whether "free breakfast" means a buffet or a single egg. So instead of a ranked top ten, this guide sorts the better Thamel hostels by the kind of stay you want.
A note on prices before we start. The numbers below are the lowest bed prices we saw in October 2026, converted at roughly NPR 152 to the US dollar. Peak season (October, November, March, April) pushes them up, so treat every figure as approx and check the live rate with the hostel before you pay.
Thamel in 60 seconds
Thamel isn't one street. It's a tangle of lanes in north-central Kathmandu, and where your hostel sits inside it changes your night.
- Central Thamel (around JP Road and the Thamel Chowk area): shops, bars, live music, trekking gear. Most convenient, also the loudest.
- Paknajol and Kaldhara (north-west edge): a few minutes' walk from the centre but noticeably calmer. A lot of the newer social hostels are up here.
- Kwabahal and Bhagwan Bahal (north-east side): older Newar courtyards and quieter residential lanes. Good if you want to be close but not in it.
- Amrit Marg and the eastern edge: near the main road, handy for taxis and for walking out towards Lazimpat.
The airport is about 6 km away (approx), so most arrivals end up in Thamel within 30 to 45 minutes unless traffic is bad. Kathmandu Durbar Square is a 20-minute walk south, and the Garden of Dreams, on Tridevi Marg right at the edge of Thamel, costs NPR 400 for foreign visitors and is the best quiet hour you'll find in the neighbourhood.

Best for meeting people (social, not wild)
Elbrus Home
If we had to send a first-time solo traveller to one Thamel hostel, it would probably be this one. Elbrus Home has 6-bed dorms plus private rooms, a garden and terrace, an in-house bar and café, free breakfast and a tour desk. It also has the strongest track record of anywhere in this guide: 9.7/10 from more than 2,900 reviews on Hostelworld when we checked in October 2026. A score that high across that many stays usually means the staff are doing the boring things right, day after day.
Dorm beds start around US$6 (approx NPR 950). See Elbrus Home.
WanderThirst Hostels
WanderThirst sits on Kaldhara Marg in the Paknajol pocket and is bigger and busier than Elbrus. Dorms run from 4 beds up to 14, there's a female-only dorm, a garden, a terrace, a bar and a café. It scored 9.0/10 from about 860 Hostelworld reviews. Big dorms aren't for everyone, but if your goal is finding trekking partners for Annapurna or Langtang, a full common area helps.
Beds from around US$6.30 (approx NPR 960). See WanderThirst.
Flock Hostel Kathmandu
Flock is another Paknajol option with a wide spread of dorm sizes (4 to 12 beds), a female dorm, private rooms, a terrace, bar, café and common room. Its Hostelworld score was 8.8/10 from about 625 reviews. That's a little lower than the two above, and in our view it's the pick when the others are full rather than the first call.
Beds from around US$5.40 (approx NPR 820). See Flock Hostel.
Best for a party night
Yakety Yak Hostel
Yakety Yak is in Market Mall on Amrit Marg, and it has the biggest dorm on this list: 16 beds, alongside 4, 8 and 10-bed rooms, a female dorm and privates. Terrace, bar and café are all on site. It rated 9.7/10 from about 250 reviews. If you want a drink with strangers on your first night and don't mind a bit of noise, it's a fair bet.
Beds from around US$5.30 (approx NPR 810). See Yakety Yak.
Planet Nomad Hostel
Planet Nomad, up near Pipalbot in Paknajol, has 4 and 10-bed dorms, a female dorm, privates, a terrace, bar, café and, unusually for Thamel, a guest kitchen. It's one of the cheapest social hostels we list, with beds from around US$5 (approx NPR 760). The catch: when we checked, it only had 5 reviews on Hostelworld (10/10). Promising, but too early to call it proven.
A quick honest word about Alobar1000 on Kaldhara Marg. It's one of the best-known names in Thamel and holds 8.4/10 from about 80 reviews, but our listing for it is still thin, so we can't vouch for the details yet. Alobar1000 is here if you want to look.
Best for quiet sleep
My Garden House
On Ganesh Raj Marg, My Garden House is the one to book when you need actual sleep, for example the night before a 6 AM bus or after a long trek. It has 6-bed dorms and private rooms, a garden, a terrace and free breakfast, but no bar. It scored 9.7/10 from about 316 reviews. Check-in is from 11:00, earlier than most.
Beds from around US$8 (approx NPR 1,150). See My Garden House.
Kwabahal Garden Hostel and Kwabahal Boutique Hostel
These two sit near each other on Wakbajra Marg in Kwabahal, on the quieter north-east side of Thamel. Both have small dorms (4 and 6 beds at the Garden, 4 to 8 at the Boutique), female dorms, en-suite privates, gardens and cafés. The Boutique is the more established one, 9.2/10 from about 208 reviews. The Garden scored 10/10 but from only 11 reviews when we checked.
Beds from around US$7 to US$8 (approx NPR 1,070 to 1,210). Kwabahal Boutique and Kwabahal Garden.
Avalon House KTM
Avalon House on Lekhnath Marg is private rooms only, no dorms. That makes it a nice step up for couples, or for anyone who's done ten nights in bunks and wants a door that locks. It has a garden, terrace, bar, café and free breakfast, and a 9.4/10 score from about 608 reviews. Rooms from around US$7.20 (approx NPR 1,100), which is hard to beat for a private in Thamel.
Best for remote work
Checkpoint KTM
Checkpoint, on Paknajol Marg, is small (4 and 6-bed dorms, a female dorm, privates) and has a coworking corner, a café, a bar, a terrace and free breakfast. Reviews are still very few (9.4/10 from 4 on Hostelworld), so think of it as a new place with a sensible setup rather than a sure thing. Beds from around US$6.50 (approx NPR 990).
Bed and Pillow Hostel
Bed and Pillow also lists a coworking corner, plus a terrace, bar, common room and free breakfast, with 8 and 9-bed dorms and privates. It's the cheapest bed in this guide at around US$3.30 (approx NPR 500). It had a perfect score but from just 10 reviews, so look at recent photos before you commit a whole week.
Cheapest decent dorms
If you only care about the price per night, the cheapest beds we found in Thamel in October 2026 were roughly:
- Bed and Pillow Hostel: approx NPR 500
- Planet Nomad Hostel: approx NPR 760
- Yakety Yak Hostel: approx NPR 810
- Flock Hostel Kathmandu: approx NPR 820
- Khangsar Home Hostel (JP Road): approx NPR 890
- Thamel CourtYard Hostel: approx NPR 950
Khangsar Home is worth a mention on its own: it's right in central Thamel on JP Road, with a garden, terrace and airport transfers, and rated 9.6/10 from 14 reviews. Thamel CourtYard has 4 and 8-bed dorms, a female dorm and, rare at this price, air-conditioning.
Our take: below about NPR 700 a night, you're usually trading away something, whether that's a good mattress, hot water that actually works, or a locker. Paying an extra NPR 200 to 300 for a hostel with hundreds of solid reviews is the best money you'll spend in Kathmandu.
How to choose (and what to check before you pay)
A few things we'd ask any Thamel hostel before handing over cash:
- Which floor is the bar on? A rooftop bar above your dorm is a different night from one by the front gate.
- Is the female dorm its own room with its own bathroom? Most hostels in this guide list a female-only dorm, but layouts differ.
- Hot water hours. Many places run on solar plus a backup heater. Evening showers are usually fine, early mornings can be cold in winter.
- Luggage storage for trekkers. If you're going off to Annapurna or Everest for two weeks, ask whether storing a bag is free and where it's kept.
- Earplugs anyway. Thamel has bars, dogs, temple bells and morning traffic. Even the quiet hostels aren't silent.

Heading to Pokhara next?
Most people leave Thamel on the morning tourist bus to Pokhara, which leaves from Sorhakhutte, a short walk from the hostels above. Our Kathmandu to Pokhara bus guide has 2026 prices and timings.
In Pokhara, Lazy Lads Backpackers Hostel is a good next stop: a social garden hostel on a quiet lane off Pragati Marga, about 15 minutes on foot from Phewa Lake, with free breakfast, a bar and café, a games room, a female dorm and private rooms. More options are on the Pokhara hostels page.
