Nepal on a Budget: Daily Costs
Realistic daily costs for dorms, food, transport and treks in Nepal.
Accommodation
Hostel dorms in Kathmandu and Pokhara often cost US$3–10 a night. Teahouses on trek may be cheap or even free if you eat your meals there.
Food
Dal bhat at local restaurants is filling and cheap, often with free refills. Tourist cafes in Thamel and Lakeside cost more.
Transport
Tourist buses between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan cost far less than flights. Local buses are cheaper still but slower.
Trekking
Teahouse prices rise with altitude. Budget roughly US$25–50 a day on trek, plus permits and a licensed guide where required.
Money tips
Carry cash for trekking areas, as ATMs are scarce once you leave the cities. Bargain politely in markets but not in fixed-price shops.
