Why backpackers come to Kathmandu

Most visitors land at Tribhuvan International Airport and base themselves in Thamel, a dense grid of guesthouses, cafes and trekking shops north of the old city. Quieter alternatives include Patan, Swayambhu and residential pockets east of the centre.

The valley holds seven UNESCO-listed monument zones, including Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, so it rewards a few days before or after a trek.
